Your Flat Roof Specialists in Fort Worth, TX

Here at Ferris Roofing Contractors, we are well-known in the Fort Worth area for our expertise in flat roofs for commercial applications. We handle all types of flat roofing for your commercial building as part of re-roofing or new construction. Flat roofing is vastly different than other kinds of traditional pitched roofing, posing its own challenges, benefits and drawbacks. Yes, it does require more maintenance and care, but in return it’s very durable and long-lasting. We know how to handle flat roofs and address their very specific requirements, such as ponding. This is what happens when standing water that accumulates on a flat roof will not evaporate or run off the roof properly. If left to sit, this water will creep into even the smallest of cracks and cause leaks. You can’t afford the downtime and potential damage that this situation poses.

Built-Up Roofing

This is a blend of felt, bitumen, and surfacing. The felts are made of glass, organic, or polyester fibers and are designed to reinforce the material so no pulling occurs. Bitumen, consisting of either coal-tar or asphalt, will bind the felts together to add a waterproofing effect. Gravel and slag are added for advanced protection against mechanical damage. According to This Old House, this traditional hot-tar-and-gravel roof is comprised of three or more plies of waterproof material alternated with hot tar and ballasted by a layer of smooth river stone.

Single-Ply EPDM

Also known as rubber roofing, this is constructed of a rubber-polymer blend for long-lasting durability and effectiveness. Best part is, it can resist temperature extremes, ozone and moisture. It resembles the material of an inner tube and can resist damage from sunlight.

Thermoplastics PVC/TPO Single-Ply

Essentially a PVC product, this material has a reinforced membrane featuring durable solvent-or-hot-air welded seams for increased stability. TPO combines the hot-air welding of EPDM with traditional single-ply materials — both being very light weight with the ability to resist high temperatures.

Modified Bitumen

With modified bitumen, the plastic or rubber-based polymeric binders combine with asphalt to result in top-notch performance and durability. It’s built up in layers for the ultimate in strength. There are two types: torch-down systems which involve heating up the adhesive as it is unrolled, and peel-and-stick systems that are much safer and easier these days.

Benefits of Flat Roofs

There are many advantages to installing a flat roof versus a pitched roof on your commercial business, from safety to practicality to durability. Here’s a look at some of the more common benefits. Flat roofs are:

  • Easier to access and maintain: All you need is a ladder or internal access up to the roof to do periodic maintenance and cleaning. Because you have the ability to easily access the roof, more costly repairs can be avoided.
  • Durable: It’s easy to maintain the composition of a flat roof, with the gravel and tar structures forming its foundation having the ability to last a long time. In fact, most commercial roofs can last 30 years or more.
  • Storage: Flat roofs allow you to store items on it that you wouldn’t otherwise have the space to put them, such as air conditioning units, vents and other heavy equipment.
  • Affordable: Flat roofs are generally very affordable, in terms of initial installation and ongoing costs. Maintenance is minimal, with little to no repairs needed. Plus, no shingles or decorative elements are necessary, which also keeps costs down. When repairs are needed, which is rare, it’s affordable to fix flat roof surfaces.
